Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition

Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition

Once in a while a game comes along that is so original and full of charm that you can't help but be floored.

One such game is 2019's Untitled Goose Game developed by Australian indie studio, House House. For those unfamiliar with this indie darling, Untitled Goose Game is a puzzle stealth game where players use the not so titular goose character's abilities to rain havoc on the inhabitants of a quaint English village.

Fast forward five years and gamers in Victoria (or those lucky enough to be visiting Melbourne during the summer hols like myself!) have been granted an opportunity to peek behind the curtain of this indie smash hit's development - courtesy of Melbourne's museum of screen culture, ACMI.

Visitors to the Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition are treated to a host of behind-the-scenes goodies, including animation reels, concept art, sketches and technical insights. Flip books and pages upon pages of the developers' hand-written notes give great insight into some of the key decisions that shaped the creation of a highly appealing, integrated world, which is of course ripe for the taking by a goose with no qualms with disrupting the day of nearby local residents. The exhibition of course gives due recognition to some of said goose's most memorable adversaries, including an elderly farmer prone to hat theft and the village's broom-wielding, High Street shopkeeper.

Hands down the highlight of the exhibition is getting to pick up a controller and muck around with early versions of some of the most memorable areas in the game such as the village High Street, which is actively patrolled by the ever-vigilant, aforementioned shopkeeper - steer clear of that broom People of Perth & beyond!

The exhibition also masterfully connects the game’s hilarious design to the history of slapstick, tracing its enduring popularity and comedic stylings back through a century of film and television.

The Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition is open until Sunday 16 February 2025 and welcomes gamers of all ages.

Want to know more but can't make it to Melbourne? Lucky for you Untitled Goose Game has been featured in Our Favourite Indie Games series. You can find the latest entry in the three-part series right here.
